A resistor provides a voltage drop so that current can flow through a circuit. Just on its own it doesn't provide current so I didn't get electrocuted. They are literally a dime a dozen so we tend to be careless with them and leave the laying all over the lab.

what the h--- is a resistor? i guess in my line of work finding something in the bottom of my coffee cup wouldn't be good!
